Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont
224 Washington Street
Fredericksburg, VA 22405

Sometime in the early 1890s Gari Melchers began a lifelong preoccupation with painting mothers in a wide range of attitudes with their children. The Art Institute of Chicago’s version is surely Melchers’ most beloved and widely recognized example. Although his image speaks of the universal mother figure, having a connection with all mothers, it also makes reference to the Classical notion of the Virgin Mary, solemnly raising her infant in symbolic offering to the world. It is a timeless and unforgettable icon of maternal love. Related paintings and preparatory works drawn from the Gari Melchers Home and Studio collection will accompany this important loan.
